Pre hospital emergency care has traditionally been offered by ambulance drivers with very little or no medical education. In other settings hospital staff including nurses and doctors have offered emergency care primarily in inter facility transfers and planned patient transport. Recently health systems are beginning to incorporate structured emergency response systems with qualified emergency care personnel from recognized tertiary health institutions who can offer medical care and technical rescue to assist those who may find themselves in emergencies requiring urgent medical care and technical rescue. It is with this background that the Emergency Medical Care Department has designed programmes in the emergency medical field to provide an opportunity for those wanting to acquire qualifications in the emergency medical care profession.
