Boitekanelo College Launches Buku E-Book System
Boitekanelo College, in partnership with BUKU, has officially launched the BUKU e-book system, a subscription-based platform that provides students with access to a vast digital library of higher education textbooks. The launch took place on Wednesday at the college campus in Tlokweng.
BUKU, a streaming platform for e-textbooks, hosts over 170,000 books covering more than 1,000 topics and subtopics. The system was founded by Alexander Postma, Bertus Epema, and Jeff Van Der Laan, who were inspired to create an affordable alternative after witnessing the financial burden of purchasing textbooks.
Speaking virtually during the launch, BUKU Co-Founder and CEO Jeff Van Der Laan shared his personal experience of struggling to afford a $100 textbook. This challenge sparked the idea of creating a subscription model similar to music and media streaming services, ensuring students have access to essential academic resources at an affordable cost.
“So that's when the dream and mission came about, to provide affordable access to textbooks for all students. Today, I’m happy to say that scholars, students, and teachers now have access to over 170,000 books, with more being added every day,” Van Der Laan said.
Boitekanelo College students are set to benefit greatly from the BUKU system, which offers significant advantages over traditional print books. These include portability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. Student Representative Council President Esnath Baloi revealed the system’s financial benefits, noting how it allows students to manage their book allowances more effectively.
“With economically friendly subscription plans, we now have access to a variety of reading materials, books, and journals without financial strain. This is a revolutionary shift in how we approach education,” Baloi remarked.
In his closing remarks, Boitekanelo College Founder and President, Dr. Tiro Mampane, described the launch as more than just an initiative but a transformation in quality professional healthcare education in Botswana and beyond.
“Today, we embrace a future where learning is more accessible, affordable, and aligned with the digital age. The BUKU app is a groundbreaking platform providing instant access to textbooks, academic materials, journals, and other essential learning resources,” Dr. Mampane stated. Boitekanelo College is the first institution in Botswana to adopt the BUKU system, setting a precedent for digital learning advancements in the country.
